MCP server
An MCP server exposes tools, data sources, prompts, or workflows to AI clients through the Model Context Protocol.
Expanded definition
An MCP server is the provider side of the Model Context Protocol. It lets AI applications discover and call external capabilities such as file access, database queries, search, calculators, internal APIs, reusable prompts, and workflow actions. MCP servers make integrations reusable across clients that support the protocol, including assistants, coding tools, and enterprise AI applications. Production MCP servers should be scoped by identity, permissions, rate limits, audit logs, and data-access policy.
